Troubleshooting Java Applets

These days Java experiences several security flaws and is often blocked by browsers. It is nearly infeasible to list here all possible reasons why the applets do not work on your system and how to force your browser to run Java applets.

First of all, you need Java to be installed on your computer. Most likely it is already the case for modern computers. However, the browsers insist on installation of the most recent version of Java. Currently, it is Version 8. Java is a cross-platform system and can be downloaded for free from the Oracle web page. Click on Downloads tab and select Java Runtime Environment (JRE). If you experience further security problems by running Java applets from the course web page, the following steps usually fix them.

  1. Launch javacpl application. On Windows computers is located in the Java installation folder in Program Files (x86) -> Java -> jre8 -> bin
  2. Select Security Tab in Java Control Panel application. Make sure that Enable Java content in the browser checkbox is checked. Add http://cs2.uwsuper.edu to the Exception Site List. Also, set security level to High or Medium.
  3. Click the Advanced tab and make sure that Default Java for browsers and Java Plug-in boxes are checked.
  4. Launch Firefox or IE browser from the DESKTOP mode. This is Windows8 feature only and this step is essential. Use Windows key on the keyboard to toggle between the modes.
  5. Agree with all possible browser warning to run the applet. There is no any security danger to run the course applets. They won't do any harm on your PC.
